KOI POND QUILT

Finished Quilt:  36" x 68"

Do you have a big bold fabric that you would like to feature in a quilt?  Here is a pattern for you!

This is a lovely quilt that is suitable for a toddler or lap.   It was designed for this beautiful piece of Koi fabric from my stash.  The print stands out, but is also toned down.  It's a simple modern design with wonderful movement of pattern and colour.   Staying in a range of blue cool tones accentuates the main fabric and gives it a watery feel.

CUTTING:

Feature Print:

Cut 1 - Width of Fabric (WOF) x 24"

Accent Fabrics:

Cut 2 - 24" x 6 1/2"
Cut 2 - 24" x 4"

Setting Strips:

Cut 16 - 2 1/2"  WOF strips.

Sew the accent fabrics to the short edges of the feature fabric as shown in these photos.

  Press to one side.

Cross cut your pieced fabric into 6 - 4" strips.

Number the pieces as above.
They need to be kept in order to feature your main fabric design.

Using 14 of your setting strips,  sew together end-to-end into pairs to make 7 long strips.

(Optional:  Use Connecting Threads Wide Backing Fabric as I did.
You will need 8 WOF 2 1/2" setting strips in total and no piecing is required at this point.)

Sew your pieced 4" strips and your setting 2 1/2" strips long edge to long edge.
Do this with all 6 of your pieced 4" strips.

 Trim the excess.

Add the 7th setting strip to the remaining edge.

Sew the remainder of your quilt together keeping the numbered order.

Add a 2 1/2" setting strip to the top and bottom.

The finished quilt.

Awesome Reminders from the Archives!

Hello gorgeous quilters!

I was looking back at my blog post "A Few Tips on Free Motion Quilting - Round Robin Sampler" to jog my memory on how to stitch leaves on my new Canadiana Improv Quilt that I am working on.

As I was looking at this particular post it reminded me that I have many wonderful posts that some of my newer followers would be interested in.   Here is a list of some of my faves for your info and enjoyment!

Always, thank you for reading!   πŸ’Melanie

SELVAGE QUILT TAGS

The selvages on fabrics are so cute that I thought they would make great tags for quilts!

As part of a quilt label it is recommended to mention the fabrics.
Here is a great way to do just that.
You can even add numerous tags side-by-side if you desire.

Here is the process.

Cut the selvages off of both sides of your feature fabric,
cutting the patterned selvage 1/4" wider than the label selvage.

Sew the raw edges of one pattern selvage and one label selvage rights sides together.

Press open.

Press in half, keeping the selvage edges even.

Top stitch the selvage edge together.

Trim to size.

Fold in half and pin together.

Sew into the binding of your quilt.

I just love this πŸ’š and hope you do too!

The Wavy Lines and Butterflies compliment each other well.
Wavy Lines are simple to do using gentle curves and a walking foot.
Use at least 2 rows of stitching side by side for a professional look.

My mom's little pottery angel hanging on the fence photo-bombed this picture!
 How cute is that?

BABY LOVE - QCQ 1

Here is the first variation for the QCQ (Quarter Circle Quilt).

This finished quilt for baby measures 30 1/2" x 30 1/2".

My wonderful friend has 2 daughters expecting babies in June a day apart from each other.  This is a perfect opportunity to do some πŸ’š loving quilt designs.

When I picked this fabric for the inspiration that I had for the QCQ, I had no idea of the name of it.  It just looked like the perfect fabric.  What a surprise when I saw the selvage edge with the title "Two Daughters"!   How cute is that?

For this variation start with the Basic QCQ Blocks in the  PATTERN LINK HERE.

 πŸ’š "Baby Love" QCQ 1

This is a lovely setting featuring the πŸ’š hearts.

This square baby quilt requires 36 QCQ Basic Blocks (Link Here)
and 2 WOF (width of fabric) strips 3" wide for the borders.

These beautiful little hearts are so lovely for a tiny baby.

After deciding on your layout, sew your blocks together in pairs.

Next, sew your pairs into strips of 6 blocks.

Cut 2 - 3" WOF strips.
These will be attached to the 2 sides of the quilt top
where the Quarter Circles are exposed.

Sew your 6 strips of blocks together
and attach the 2 WOF neutral strips to the 2 sides.

I can hardly wait to free-motion-quilt some hearts πŸ’š onto this modern baby quilt.

I am making a baby quilt for each of the two daughters.
One quilt will have aqua binding and the other will have yellow.
